Measure your miles as part of the State of California’s Road Charge Pilot Program using DrivewayCA.
Californians pay about 41 cents in taxes per gallon of gasoline. From this tax, the average Californian pays $310 annually to support road improvements. There may be a better way to measure road use and to fund roads than by taxing gasoline.
The State of California is exploring other ways to measure road use, such as measuring the miles you actually drive in California. This could mean that drivers who drive less will pay less.
For registered pilot program participants only:
If you selected smartphone-based measurement, begin enrolling by simply downloading DrivewayCA. Once you enter your phone and enrollment code, you are enrolled. DrivewayCA automatically detects and measures your driving.
DrivewayCA will prompt you each month to verify miles for each of your cars. Click the reminder message and then follow the instructions. You will enter your odometer miles and take a picture of your odometer.
DrivewayCA app uses sensor fusion technology, patented by Driveway Software, to accurately measure the miles you drive in California. Artificial intelligence and machine learning distinguishes between trips where you drove and non-driving trips, like bus and train trips.
Note: During long trips, having GPS running on your phone in the background can impact battery consumption.
